I think I would have never gotten it without your clue, the word ‘characters’. For the first 15 seconds or so, I thought it was some kind of graph or a company logo.

I once heard the creator of the Simpsons, Matt Groening, say that the key to a memorable cartoon character is for it to be recognizable in silhouette. (Quintessentially, Mickey Mouse). I guess this is on the same wavelength as that.
Of the others on the site, I only recognize Bert and Ernie.
